If you are interested in becoming a licensed Professional Engineer, you will need to start by taking the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. This exam is given twice a year but is only given at Clarkson in the spring. Clarkson students may apply through the Coulter School of Engineering Office located in 102 CAMP. Application forms are available at this location. Once you have filled out forms 1 and 2, return them to us for proofing and to make sure you are eligible. We will send your application to the New York State Education Department for you. The next exam given on campus will be on April 17, 2010. The deadline for you to turn in those applications is October 16, 2009. The next available fall exam will be given on October 24, 2009. The deadline for those applications will be April 17, 2009.

The Application
Your application should include the following items. (Use paper clips, not staples)

Form 1
Question 5 – Address: Use your home or permanent address, as the next packet of information you will receive will be sent 6-8 weeks later, which falls after the semester has ended for both spring and fall applicants.

Question 7 – Check Part A

Question 13 – Note that Elementary and High School only need to be recorded if the schools attended were outside the U.S. List all schools attended and degrees earned including Clarkson (example: Clarkson University 9/04 to 5/08 B.S. in Civil Engineering)

Question 19 – Two New York State loans are TAP and Child of Veterans. Stafford loans are federally funded.

Skip questions 14, 15 and 16. Graduate students may wish to answer question 15.

Question 22 – A "head & shoulders" photo must be glued (not stapled) to the reverse side of application Form 1. Rite Aid at 201 Market Street (265-3500) can provide you with your photos in 15 minutes. (Don't lose or misplace your second photo. You will need to take it with you to the exam.)

Question 23 – It is necessary to have this form notarized. A list of notary publics on campus has been included in your packet.

Form 2
Fill out front side only

Question 7: Your date of commencement – December/2008, or May/2009.
degree awarded – "Bachelor of Science"

We will submit these forms to SAS, then they will send it to the State Education Department when you have completed your degree requirements.

Application Fee
A check made payable to New York State Education Department in the amount of $70.

New York State Eligibility
The New York State Education Department considers you eligible to apply to take the exam when you have "completed three years in an approved program in engineering at the undergraduate level." Therefore, all applicants must have completed 84 credit hours toward their engineering degree (students who have completed 84 credit hours are considered seniors). If you started as a freshman in a degree program other than engineering or are a dual or double major, please check with your advisor or departmental secretary to verify that you have the proper number of credits towards your engineering degree. If you have taken any classes off-campus, please check with SAS to determine whether or not the official transcript of those courses have been received and proper credit posted. This is your responsibility and could make the difference whether or not you will be determined to be eligible to sit for the exam.

Please note: When your application is processed, you will receive a notice stating "we have received a tentative form 20" and that they "will require a final form 2 after graduation." Ignore this message. This is just a reminder that the registrar has sent a list of students eligible to take the exam and that upon completion of degree requirements in May, they should send a verified Form 2.

Castle Worldwide, Inc.
Approximately 6-8 weeks after your application has been received by the state (while you are home on break between semesters), you should receive a scheduling form for Castle Worldwide, Inc., the firm contracted by New York State to administer the exam. If you have not received these materials after eight weeks time, you should contact the NY State Education Department at 518-474-3817 to find out if there was a problem with your application.

VERY IMPORTANT Castle Worldwide, Inc. requires a separate fee of $135. You must return your scheduling form and $135 check to Castle Worldwide, Inc. before February 1 or you will forfeit your eligibility. If you are found ineligible for this reason, you will receive a 50% refund from the state if requested by mail. They will not accept refund requests by phone.

Castle Worldwide Inc. will send you an admission ticket three weeks prior to the exam. The admission ticket includes your registration number, the exam date and exact address of the exam location, and the time you must arrive to take the exam. If you lose your admission ticket or if it has not arrived 10 days prior to the exam date, it is your responsibility to contact Castle Worldwide, Inc. at 1-800-655-4845 or 919-572-6880. Note that late arrivals to the exam site may not be allowed to take the exam and will not be allowed to make up any lost time. If you are scheduled for but are absent from the exam, you will not receive a refund. Fees are not transferable to future exams.

Items You Should Bring to the Examination Site

  • Your admission ticket
  • Photo ID with signature
  • At least two soft lead #2 pencils
  • An eraser

Results will be released approximately 3-4 months after the exam. Results are never given over the phone.

Fundamentals of Engineering Reference Handbook
When taking the F.E. exam you are not allowed to take books or notes with you. You are, however, allowed to use a Fundamentals of Engineering Reference Handbook. You will be provided with one at the time of the exam. If you would like to receive one to study from you may contact NCEES. From this site, you may purchase the handbook.

December Graduates
For December graduates, there is also an exam given in the fall. You need to have completed 84 credit hours towards an engineering degree at the time you submit your application. The fall exams are not given at Clarkson, However, you have a choice of locations where you may take it. The choices are: New York City, Albany, Syracuse or Buffalo. You will pick the location where you want to take the exam on the scheduling form sent to you by the State. You will be required to return your scheduling form and check for $135 to Castle Worldwide, Inc. by September 1st. Castle Worldwide, Inc. will notify you about three weeks prior to the examination as to where the exact location is (i.e. Syracuse University, Engineering Hall).

Graduate Students who received their undergraduate degree from a foreign university and want to take the exam must provide an OFFICIAL Transcript (in English) from the university where they got their degree. They may do this by using form 2 - Transcript Request and having the university send the transcript directly to New York State (make sure it is requested in time for the transcript to be in Albany before the filing deadline). This also applies to students who received their undergraduate degree from a university which is not accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) or offered by a department which, at the time of your graduation, offered at least one undergraduate engineering program accredited by EAC/ABET or by the Canadian Accreditation Board.

Review Books
Review books for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (F.E.) are available through the University Bookstore and are also sold by Chi Epsilon. To purchase a F.E. review book online, please visit Professional Publications.

Review Sessions
The School of Engineering offers review sessions in the various subjects (Electrical Science, Materials Science, Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Statics, Economics, and Fluid Mechanics). They are usually one night a week for two hours during the spring semester. These sessions are also videotaped and will be replayed on WCKN in case you miss one. Please watch the Daily Jolt for the schedule. Unfortunately, review sessions are not feasible for students taking the exam in the fall as there is usually a very small number of applicants. However, the videotapes will be shown on WCKN for anyone interested and will be on loan from the Coulter School of Engineering.

About the Exam
The F.E. exam has recently undergone a significant change. In the past, the eight-hour exam has been a test of a dozen topics that are the basis of every engineer's education. That changed in the fall of 1996. Now the exam has two distinct parts. The morning four-hour portion is similar to the old exam with about the same dozen topics. The afternoon four-hour portion is new and different. There are six different afternoon exams: civil, mechanical, electrical, industrial, chemical, and a general exam. While the morning exam covers the first two years of an engineer's education, the afternoon exam covers about the last two years of the engineer's education in their specific branch of engineering. The morning exam has 120 one-point, multiple-choice questions and the afternoon exam has 60 two-point questions in the discipline chosen by the applicant. We recommend that an engineer take the discipline test in his own branch of engineering as these topics are those that the engineer will use most throughout their career. Evidence to date suggests that you have a higher chance of passing the exam if you take your discipline exam.
