Physical Therapy


The Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy is responsible for leading the department to maintain accreditation and graduate qualified, competent physical therapists. The Chair of the Department must be a physical therapist with an earned PhD or EdD degree in a related field who has, or is eligible for, licensure in New York state. The Chair is experienced in accreditation, administration, leadership, curriculum development, education of physical therapists, research, and successfully obtaining grant funding. The Chair understands and has commitment to problem-based learning. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and record.

The responsibilities of the Chair include but are not limited to directing, leading, budgeting, assessing, accreditation, curriculum development, teaching, research, advising students, and serving on Department, School, and University committees.

The Chair shall:

In Department administrative matters:
 Lead and guide operations of the Department.
 Oversee and provide control of Department finances.
 Seek financial support of the Department through grants and other means.
 Support the mission and goals of the Department, School, and University.
 Represent the Department to the School and University.
 Plan for, recruit, and hire Department faculty in accordance with University rules.
 Participate in administrative governance as appropriate to further functions of the Department, School, and University.
 Develop and participate in activities that represent the Department, School, and University to the community.
 Foster faculty governance within the Department with regard to curriculum, policies, and procedures.
 Guide development and implementation of policies and procedures needed for the optimum operation of the Department.
 Guide and foster Department faculty development in teaching, practice, and research/scholarship.

In student affairs:
 Recruit undergraduate students to the University who have determined that they are interested in a career as a physical therapist.
 Recruit graduate students who will enter the graduate Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
 Mentor and advise students.
 Instruct students in areas of expertise.


In curricular affairs:
 Oversee curriculum review and development.
 Guide and participate in on-going review and modification of the overall curriculum plan.
 Prepare accreditation documents and guide the program to maintain accreditation.

In scholarship:
 Mentor faculty to enhance abilities to produce scholarship acceptable for publication and presentation in peer reviewed arenas.
 Produce scholarship for publication and presentation in peer-reviewed arenas.
 Seek grant funding to support scholarship.
 Mentor faculty in grant writing to support scholarship.

In service:
 Serve on Department, School, and University committees.
 Provide service to the community and profession.
 Mentor faculty and students to provide service to the profession and community.
