OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
Engineering Machinist for the Coulter School of Engineering - General duties related to the fabrication of Research experimental apparatus and support of graduate and undergraduate laboratories and the student prototyping lab. This position will involve considerable work with students in the student shops. Communication and organization necessary for the safe and effective use of the shops is a requirement for this position.
WORK PERFORMED
Interpret mechanical drawings accurately
Able to machine to close tolerances on the equipment provided in the department
High proficiency is required with manual mills and lathes, CNC mills and lathes, and the other shop equipment available to us.
CAD, CAM, and manual programming skills are a requirement for this position.
Expert knowledge of mechanics and mechanical design to assist faculty and students in the design and repair of research and lab equipment.
Able to make sound recommendations for equipment and tooling purchases for the department. Help to maintain shop inventory of tools and supplies.
Maintain knowledge and proficiency of new tooling, materials, and fabrication techniques.
All staff in the department may be required to teach shop courses and provide curriculum support.
Clean and maintain shop space and equipment
Communicate with the supervisor about department objectives and problems
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
QUALIFICATIONS
Associate degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience. At least five years experience in machine trades with experience on lathes, milling machines, drilling presses, band saws, CNC lathes and mills, and welding equipment.
Knowledge of CAD, CAM, and programming skills are desired. Excellent communication skills. Communication between staff and the supervisor about projects, lab problems, and student training are critical to the success of the department. The SOE machinist is expected to aid in the organization of the various shops and labs that the department oversees. Technical knowledge is extremely important for all department staff.
Physical Requirements
1. Manual material handling activities requiring frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of parts and materials ( up to 50 pounds occasionally )
2. Frequent bending, crouching and twisting of torso to access equipment, and install, replace, clean or troubleshoot
3. Frequent and repetitive fine hand manipulation of parts and hand tools
4. Frequent and repetitive hand manipulation, torque and grasping of hand tools to test, dismantle, install or repair (pipes, fittings, valves, pumps, etc.)
5. Occasional to frequent kneeling, crouching, and crawling to access difficult-to-reach equipment
6. Mechanical equipment installation and repair activities requires repetitive and prolonged extended reaching of upper extremities in all positions, including above the shoulders and below the knees
7. Occasional to frequent climbing of stairs/ladders to access machinery (pipes)
8. Visual acuity to read gauges and meters from distance to up close
9. Frequent walking and standing the entire shift
10. Ability to operate motorized equipment
11. Monitoring equipment and systems requires ability to hear warning bells, alarms, and radio and telephone conversations
