Clarkson University's Timber Bridge Team scored third place for "Most Innovative Design" in the 2007 National Timber Bridge Design Collegiate Competition.
Civil Engineering
Look around you. Almost anything you move into, through, over or under was designed and built by civil engineers: bridges, buildings, airports, aircraft structures, space structures, ships, submarines, waterways and water and wastewater treatment facilities. Civil engineers are known as designers and builders and they are responsible for the physical infrastructures and transportation systems that are the cornerstones of our economy. Many are involved with environmental issues ranging from hazardous and solid waste management to lake and river environmental restoration. They also help protect people from catastrophic forces of nature such as hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.
In addition to the bachelor of science degree, Clarkson also offers graduate degrees in civil engineering.
Civil engineering offers an enormous range of career opportunities: structural design; water, oil, gas, mineral or other resource and land development; transportation and hazardous waste management; and general project management. The degree may lead to a career in making airplanes, spacecraft, ocean liners, or submarines, or to medicine, dentistry or law. Civil engineers work for industry, government and as specialized consultants. Many start their own firms.
Clarkson civil engineers are in high demand because of their experience with real-world learning and creative problem-solving. A Clarkson engineering education builds abilities in teamwork, management, communication, leadership and creative problem solving. Clarkson combines two distinctive strengths that benefit students: Personalized teaching and high-powered research. Our professors get to know students as individuals and involve undergraduates in their world-class research.
Team Competitions in Engineering Design
You will have the opportunity to tackle complex problems in a highly collaborative community known as SPEED (Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design). Besides getting teamwork and real-world experience, you have the chance to compete against teams from other schools across the nation. Clarkson has 16 SPEED teams, including several of special interest to civil engineers:
- Concrete Canoe
- Construction Management
- Environmental Design
- Steel Bridge
- Timber Bridge
