This past year two teams of first-year students participated in the Consortium for Mathemiatics and its Applications (COMPA) International Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Both teams received Honorable Mentions. The Clarkson teams were among 949 teams competing from 12 countries.
Mathematics: Research Opportunities
Clarkson professors get to know students as individuals. But they also conduct world-class research in important areas — and involve undergraduates in the process. Clarkson's dynamic real-world learning approach includes a number of undergraduate research opportunities. By taking advantage of these, you will add teamwork and collaboration to your range of skills.
Many students participate in the Putnam Exam, a national mathematics competition which pits your problem-solving skills against other mathematics student teams. The Mathematical Modeling Contest is another popular annual event. Over the course of a weekend, you solve a variety of real-life mathematical problems based on provided data. Clarkson has an active student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, which sponsors programming contests nationally and internationally. Students also network in Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society.
Clarkson faculty and students are actively engaged in a variety of research projects. Recent student research projects at Clarkson include:
- Discrete Fourier Transform for Solving Difference Equations
- Determining Invariants in Knot Theory
- Intrinsic Linking Properties of Graphs
- Chaos and Dynamical Systems
- Computer Arithmetic
- Computational Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems, Chemical Engineering, and Atmospheric Studies
- Statistics Projects
